Early Interventions
Principles
We may not forget young children learn through play. It doesn't necessarily mean we will play with cars or dolls the entire session. We use play as a fundamental motivator, reinforcer, and driving force of the session. During the play, our goal is to apply teaching strategies and procedures sensitively, so the child can learn. This type of learning involves items and activities the child prefers, what he/she likes the most, and what brings him/her joy.
In the early years, when the human brain is naturally most flexible and ready for learning, the focus intensively centers around areas of early intervention. That includes the development of functional communication (receptive and expressive language), visual perception, the development of imitation as a fundamental learning tool, but also the development of play, basic social skills, and personal self-care. In the early school years, it's essential to focus also on academics (such as reading, writing, basic mathematical concepts, and counting), intraverbals as complex structures of the language, and using functional communication in a social environment.
